Photographer and memoirist, Donald Woodman, Agnes Martin & Me, introduced by Kathleen Brennan, photographer and filmmaker (at the Harwood Museum). “Agnes Martin & Me” is a new portrait of iconic painter Agnes Martin unveiled by Donald Woodman’s personal and frank memoir recounting the seven years he worked as her assistant and caretaker from 1977-1984. Complemented by Woodman’s remarkable photographs and Martin’s handwritten notes Agnes Martin & Me reveals a missing chapter of the life of this long misunderstood and complicated figure in contemporary American art. Woodman began his career as an assistant to architectural photographer Ezra Stoller and subsequently studied with and assisted Minor White at MIT, where Woodman directed the Creative Photography Lab’s gallery. In 1972 he settled in New Mexico where he worked for five years at the Sacramento Peak Solar Observatory, doing scientific photography and pursuing personal creative photo projects. In 1977, he met reclusive painter Agnes Martin, beginning a seven-year association, sharing with her his property in Galisteo, New Mexico, and serving as her personal assistant. In 1985 Woodman married the renowned feminist artist Judy Chicago, with whom he has collaborated on many art and educational projects. Kathleen Brennan began her journey of photography at the early age of 10 when she received her first Polaroid camera. A native of New Jersey, she completed her degree in Photography from the University of New Mexico in the 70’s. “I look for the abstract element in my work, the honesty, humor and the simple straightforwardness of people’s lives.” Her diverse body of work, ranging from portrait to documentary, natural landscape to urban scenes, provides an enduring testament to the transformative processes of our world. She currently resides in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico.
