"A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," Virginia Woolf famously wrote in 1929. To Meredith Garcia, this sentiment still applies today to the woman artists of Taos. "A Room of One's Own" is a diverse series of twenty-nine silver gelatin photographs depicting these female creatives. Garcia's intimate, reflective portraits of women working in their studios was inspired by the artists' statements written by Wurlitzer Fellows which were on view at the Harwood Museum of Art. The Helen Wulitzer Foundation is a local nonprofit which provides three months of rent-free and utility-paid housing to people who specialize in the creative arts. The foundation's residency program "provides artists with the time and space to create." Garcia says, "[For women] the need for a room of one's own in which to pursue one's art is more often aspirational than real, but still greatly needed."
