In the summer of 2020, with the Covid 19 pandemic at its peak, Help Outreach Taos (H.O.T.) decided to create a project that would bring the community together during difficult times.
H.O.T. is now celebrating the over 150 community members who participated in the Tapestries of Hope project. Folks from Golden Willow, as well as the students from Taos High School’s Emotional Intelligence Retreat, participated.
Pieces of fabric were distributed last August, with the idea to decorate the squares using any creative form around the theme of hope and positivity. Many people contributed work that resulted in unique and powerful images.
The first tapestry was displayed at the Taos County Courthouse in November 2020, and more have been exhibited at Holy Cross Hospital and Aceq and Medley restaurants.
For the first time, all nine tapestries will be exhibited together, Saturday, September 4th from 9 a.m - 1:00 p.m at the Gazebo on Taos Plaza, courtesy of the Taos Farmers Market.
In addition to the tapestry exhibition, H.O.T representatives will be on hand to discuss details for free Mental Health Training programs The Mental Health First Aid training courses teach how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders in youth and adults. The 6-hour session gives the skills needed to reach out and provide initial support to at risk persons.
Many counselors, educators, health practitioners and community members in Taos have already gone through this training. H.O. T.’s goal is to train and educate as many people in our community as possible.
Upcoming dates to take trainings will be announced.
